Singapore's Labour Market Remains Resilient

Despite Global Economic Headwinds

Singapore's labour market continued to demonstrate resilience in the first quarter of 2023, with the overall unemployment rate remaining stable at 2.1%. The number of unemployed residents also declined by 1,300 to 53,300.

The services sector continued to be the largest source of job growth, contributing 7,000 new jobs. Other sectors that saw job gains include construction and manufacturing.

Non-Resident Employment Declines

However, the number of non-resident employment declined for the first time since the third quarter of 2021, according to the Ministry of Manpower (MOM). The number of non-resident workers employed in Singapore fell by 1,300 to 278,800.

Government to Strengthen Rights for Self-Employed

The government has announced plans to strengthen the rights and protections for self-employed workers in Singapore. This includes the right to a written contract and more protection against workplace discrimination.
